Thesis & Dissertation Word Counter
Paste the whole document. It finds your abstract, chapters, references and appendices, counts the words with the sections your university counts, tallies your citations, and shows how far you are from the limit.

Quick answer
A thesis word count excludes the bibliography almost everywhere, and usually the title page, contents, acknowledgements and appendices. Footnotes and in-text citations are usually included, but it varies by faculty. The common limits are 80,000 words for a UK humanities PhD, 60,000 for sciences, 15,000 to 20,000 for a master's dissertation, and 150 to 250 words for an APA abstract. Paste the full document above, untick the sections your regulations exclude, and read the counted number.
Thesis and dissertation word limits
Limits are set by the faculty, not the university, and they differ more than students expect. The Cambridge table below is a useful reference because the university publishes every faculty's rule on one page, and the pattern (80,000 for discursive subjects, 60,000 for lab sciences, bibliography always excluded) holds across most UK institutions. US and Canadian programmes mostly set no word limit at all and judge by page count and committee expectation instead.
| Degree / field | Typical limit | Counted | Excluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| PhD, humanities and social sciences (UK) | 80,000 | Main text, in-text citations, usually footnotes | Bibliography, appendices, front matter |
| PhD, sciences and engineering (UK) | 60,000 to 65,000 | Main text, captions (Engineering) | Bibliography, tables, figures, appendices |
| PhD, Law and Asian studies (Cambridge) | 80,000, hard cap 100,000 | Main text; images at 200 words per page | Footnotes, appendices, bibliography |
| PhD, Economics (Cambridge) | 60,000 | Everything including bibliography and appendices | Nothing |
| PhD (US, typical) | No formal limit; 50,000 to 100,000 in practice | Set by committee | Set by committee |
| Master’s dissertation (UK, taught) | 15,000 to 20,000 | Main text, citations | References, appendices |
| Master’s by research (UK, Australia) | 30,000 to 50,000 | Main text | References, appendices |
| Undergraduate dissertation | 8,000 to 12,000 | Main text, citations | References, appendices |
| Journal article | 5,000 to 8,000 | Main text | Abstract, references, tables, legends |

Abstract word limits by style and journal
| Where | Abstract limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| APA 7 (journal articles) | 150 to 250 words | One paragraph, no citations, keywords line below |
| Science | 125 words | One paragraph, no references |
| NEJM | 250 words | Structured: Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions |
| PLOS ONE | 300 words | No citations or abbreviations |
| The Lancet | 300 words | Structured for research articles |
| IEEE and most engineering journals | 150 to 250 words | Varies by journal |
| Elsevier journals (typical) | 250 words | Set per journal in the author guide |
| Thesis abstract (UK, typical) | 300 words or one page | Often a separate 300-word summary for the library |
| Conference submission | 150 to 300 words | Check the call for papers |
What usually counts, and what usually does not
Always excluded: the reference list or bibliography. There is no faculty on the Cambridge list that counts it, and the same is true at almost every university. Almost always excluded: title page, declaration, contents, lists of figures and tables, acknowledgements, and the abstract itself (though a few faculties count the abstract, so check).
Usually counted: in-text citations, footnotes, headings, and text inside tables. Genuinely variable: appendices (excluded by most, counted by Classics, Divinity and Philosophy at Cambridge), figure captions (counted by Engineering, excluded by Biology), and footnotes (excluded by History and Law, counted by English and Classics). Some faculties convert tables to a fixed word value, typically 150 to 250 words per page, which no counter can do for you.
The practical rule: find the one paragraph in your handbook that defines the count, then use the section toggles above to match it. If your faculty counts footnotes, paste them in with the chapter text. If it excludes captions, leave them out.
How many words do citations use?
More than people think. An APA citation like (Hernández et al., 2021) is four words; a Harvard one with page numbers is five or six; a numeric [14] is one. A social-science PhD with 400 in-text citations spends 1,500 to 2,000 words on them, which is a full section. The citation counter above finds author-year citations in parentheses, narrative citations such as "Smith (2019) argued", and numeric brackets, so you can see the overhead. If you are over the limit by a small margin, converting repeated parenthetical citations to narrative ones, or moving a block of them to a footnote where footnotes are excluded, is often enough.
Cutting a thesis that is over the limit
- Check what is counted first. Students regularly panic about 5,000 words that their faculty never counts. Untick the sections that are excluded before cutting anything.
- Move, do not delete. Methods detail, robustness checks and extended tables belong in an appendix if appendices are excluded.
- Cut the literature review last. Examiners notice a thin literature review; they rarely notice a tighter discussion.
- Trim signposting. "In this chapter I will first discuss" paragraphs are the cheapest 300 words in any thesis.
- Use the readability checker on one chapter at a time; long sentences hide filler. The readability checker flags them.

PDF & Word CounterWords to PagesFrequently Asked Questions
Does the thesis word count include references?
Almost never. Every Cambridge faculty, for example, excludes the bibliography from the PhD limit, and most UK and Australian universities do the same for dissertations. Footnotes and appendices are the ones that vary: Cambridge History excludes footnotes, Classics includes them. Check your own regulations; this tool lets you switch each section in or out.
How many words should an abstract be?
APA 7 says 150 to 250 words for a journal article. Science allows 125, NEJM 250, PLOS ONE and The Lancet 300. Thesis abstracts are usually capped at 300 to 350 words, sometimes one page. The abstract check on this page counts only the text under your Abstract heading and compares it to the preset you pick.
How long is a PhD thesis?
In the UK, 80,000 words is the standard limit for humanities and social sciences and 60,000 for most sciences, excluding the bibliography. US dissertations have no national standard and run from about 50,000 words in the sciences to over 100,000 in the humanities. Master’s dissertations are typically 15,000 to 20,000 words and undergraduate dissertations 8,000 to 12,000.
How does the tool know where my references start?
It looks for headings that sit alone on a line: Abstract, Acknowledgements, Contents, Chapter 1, Introduction, Conclusion, References, Bibliography, Works Cited, Appendix A, and so on, with or without numbering. Paste the whole document and keep your headings on their own lines; if a section is missed, add its heading on a line by itself and paste again.
Do in-text citations count as words?
Usually yes. Cambridge Archaeology, Social Anthropology and most other faculties count in-text citations as part of the main text; only the reference list at the end is excluded. The citation counter here tells you how many citations you have so you can see how much of your count they take: a 300-citation thesis in APA style spends roughly 1,000 words on them.
Does the word count include tables and figure captions?
It depends on the faculty. Cambridge Engineering counts captions and excludes tables; Biology excludes captions; History counts a statistical table as 150 words. Paste the caption text in with your chapters if your rules count it, and leave tables out if they do not. The figure and table mention counts shown here help you find them.
What is the word limit for a journal article?
Most journals cap the main text at 5,000 to 8,000 words excluding the abstract, references, tables and figure legends. Letters and brief reports are 1,500 to 3,000. Always use the journal’s own author guide; the presets here are starting points.
Is my thesis stored anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and the text is gone when you close the tab. Nothing is uploaded.
