How is reading time for 100 pages calculated?
It is two steps. Multiply pages by words per page to get total words. Then divide total words by your reading speed in words per minute.
Reading time (minutes) = (pages × words per page) ÷ words per minute

The formula is simple. The inputs are where people go wrong. Most online estimates quietly assume 250 or 300 words per page and a reading speed of 200 or 300 words per minute, then present the result as if it applies to every book. It doesn't. A pocket paperback with big type and a university textbook can differ by nearly 2 to 1 in words per page, which doubles the time before your speed even enters the picture.

Does the type of book change how long 100 pages takes?

Genre also shifts speed, not just word count. Brysbaert's meta-analysis found adults read fiction about 9% faster than non-fiction, and he traced most of that gap to word length: non-fiction uses longer, less familiar words. So a non-fiction hardcover hits you twice. More words per page, and each one takes a little longer.

Brysbaert's review puts adult oral reading at about 183 words per minute, and professional audiobook narration runs slower still, around 150 to 160 words per minute.
