Product Description Length by Price Point

The higher the price, the longer the description needs to be. A $15 t-shirt needs 50-100 words: fabric, fit, care instructions. A $500 office chair needs 200-400 words: materials, ergonomic features, warranty, dimensions, weight capacity. A $2,000 laptop needs 500-1,000 words: specs, performance benchmarks, comparisons.

The reason is risk. The more money a customer spends, the more information they need to reduce purchase anxiety. A missing detail at a high price point sends the customer to a competitor who provides it.

Amazon product listings are a useful benchmark. Top-selling products typically have 150-300 words of bullet points plus a 300-500 word product description. Together that is 450-800 words of product content.

SEO and Product Descriptions

Google considers product pages with fewer than 200 words of unique text to be "thin content." If you are running an ecommerce site with 500 products that each have a 50-word description, Google has little reason to rank any of them.

Write unique descriptions for every product. Copying the manufacturer\'s description word-for-word means your page is identical to dozens of other retailers. Google will rank the original source and ignore yours.

Include the primary keyword naturally in the first 100 words, use the product name in at least one H2, and answer the top 3 questions a buyer would have. That structure alone gets you to 200-300 words of genuinely useful content.
